Description: This workshop introduces QualCoder, an open-source tool for qualitative data analysis. The session focuses on acquainting researchers with core features, including setting up a project, organizing data, and exploring basic coding and analysis workflows. Participants are encouraged to download QualCoder in advance, although that is not required for attendance.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Evaluate QualCoder for their own research needs.
- Become familiar with coding and analysis in QualCoder.
- Describe basic project setup and data management workflows.
This workshop would serve three goals: train researchers on this open-source tool, provide an opportunity for GW librarians to teach the material, and support curricular development through The Carpentries’ new QualCoder pilot.
QualCoder is free, open-source desktop software for qualitative data analysis.

Invited Speaker: Emily Blumenthal, Ph.D., is a Data Services Librarian at the Department of Research & User Services at GWU Gelman Library. She specializes in quantitative (numerical) research design, analysis, and statistical theory, and can also advise on qualitative (text-based) analysis. The statistical programs and tools she supports include Excel/Google Sheets, MATLAB, NVivo, Qualtrics, R, SAS, STATA, and SPSS, and I can also help with citation managers like Zotero or RefWorks.
This is an AES virtual session.
