Invited Speaker: Joshua D. Hartzell, MD, MS-HPEd, FACP, FIDSA
Bio sketch: Dr. Joshua Hartzell currently serves as Deputy Chair and Professor within the Department of Health Professions Education at the Uniformed Services University. He achieved the rank of Colonel, serving for 25 years in the United States Army, including a deployment to Afghanistan as a Battalion Surgeon with the 82nd Airborne Division, before retiring in 2023. He has previously completed assignments as the Assistant Dean for Faculty Development at the Uniformed Services University, Program Director for the National Capital Consortium Internal Medicine Residency, Assistant Chief of Graduate Medical Education, and Army Intern Director at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He completed a Master’s of Science in Health Professions Education at MGH Institute of Health Professions. He currently holds the rank of Professor of Medicine and Health Professions Education at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He is a board-certified Internist and Infectious Diseases Physician.
Dr. Hartzell’s current academic interests include leader and faculty development to empower leaders to create positive change in their spheres of influence at work, home, and communities. Dr. Hartzell has delivered over 100 talks on leadership development and has written numerous papers on the topic. He combined his years of boots on the ground leading in medicine with his research to teach leaders practical strategies about how to sharpen their leadership skills in his book, A Prescription for Caring in Healthcare Leadership: Building a Culture of Compassion and Excellence.
