Session Description: Educational programs have a responsibility to ensure equity in the assessments and feedback that learners receive. This presentation explores current research on equity in assessment, and learns from efforts to identify and address assessment inequities in clinical education. Participants will also examine how program evaluation and education continuous quality improvement (ECQI) can serve as powerful tools for promoting equitable assessment practices.

Invited Speaker: Dr. Arianne Teherani, PhD, MSEd, is Professor of Medicine. She is the Founding Co-Director of the University of California, Center for Climate Health and Equity and Director for Program Evaluation and Education Continuous Quality Improvement for the UCSF School of Medicine. Arianne’s research advances equity, social justice, and climate solutions in health sciences education. Her work identifies and dismantles practices perpetuating educational disparities, informing conversations, research agendas, and policies globally. Dr. Teherani examines interventions aimed at creating equity during medical training and studies exemplars of success. Arianne co-leads the Equity and Justice in Education initiative and mentors students, residents, fellows, and faculty in health professions education programs. She drives continuous quality improvement, rigorously evaluating innovative education initiatives and programs.
As Founding Co-Director of the Center for Climate, Health and Equity, she leads faculty, students, and staff across the University of California's 10-campus and 5-health care system to advance equitable and just climate solutions that promote human health and a healthy planet. She spearheads research that focuses on education as a core solution to the climate crisis. She examines outcomes of training health professionals on climate-health impacts through community-engaged health professions education, education for healthcare decarbonization, and sustainable practices in health professions training. Arianne has developed and led multiple climate change and health courses and training initiatives.
Arianne's work has been featured in venues such as National Public Radio, KTVU, and the Huffington Post. She has served and held leadership roles as a journal editor and in multiple organizations, including the Association of American Medical Colleges, the American Educational Research Association, and the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. She received the UCSF Faculty Sustainability Award and the UC Sustainability Champion Award. Arianne was named the Faculty Climate Action Champion - an award given to one faculty member at each University of California campus in recognition of their contribution to the mission of sustainability and carbon neutrality. Arianne was selected as an AERA Fellow, a program that recognizes excellence in education research, honoring those with substantial research accomplishments whose work has made a lasting impact on the field.
