This is a virtual training session offered by the CFE.

This meeting is a part of the training and is scheduled as a live session at noon on November 17. Zoom registration information is forthcoming.

This topic is challenging for many educators, both novice and experienced.  For this training, we will be using materials from the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), as well as other resources that we find useful.  While some of the contents of these resources skew toward clinical scenarios and questions, we feel that the concepts apply to all types of questions.

By the end of this workshop, you should be able to:

  • Apply question type appropriate to level of learning being tested and purpose of the test.
  • Recognize the most common errors in components of Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) design.
  • Apply best practices in the construction of MCQ for examination.

This training has two major components:

  1. Pre-session prep: View interactive module: NBME Item Writing Tutorial (45 minutes).
  2. Attend the live online session (via Zoom).

Please note that because this session will be working on questions that are/will be in actual examinations, the privacy and security of those questions are of the utmost importance.  Do not share the questions with anyone outside of this training, and do not print and/or leave them somewhere that they could be seen by others.
