Medical education programs (both UME and GME) are accountable to the public to train physicians who can deliver high-quality care. In order to keep that promise, programs must assess the quality of care their learners deliver. Frequently, this is done through rater-based assessment methods that certainly provide value, but may not reflect actual clinical care quality. To address this, multiple approaches are being developed to bridge the gap between clinical care measures and learner assessment. This presentation will describe the rationale for using clinical care measures in assessment, debate the benefits and challenges of multiple current approaches, and discuss what is on the horizon as technology continues to improve.
